Coconut Cup

It was a interesting folkcraft article which caught my eye. The title is Coconut Cup. It was used as a water container. This cup was made in a way to cut a coconut shell in half and handle was fixed. This cup was collected at Siassi Island (located between Papua New Guinea and New Britain) in 1967. May be a islander who lived in this island made this cup. The main characteristic is this cup has strange reliefs which were carved or incised regulary on the surface and a part of the handle. And these relief areas are painted brown. For example, triangular shapes, circular shapes, snaked lines, and so on. These reliefs are almost symmetry. Moreover this cup doesn't leave empty area on surface. These reliefs are neither characters nor pictures of something. Among all these reliefs, we can see triangles that are arranged radially inside some circles. I guess it expresses the sun. But totally these are really uncanny reliefs and thus I wonder what these reliefs mean. In addition, I have a question whether this cup was a special thing for ritual or was usually used in daily life. I think the latter. Because Siassi Islanders must have unique fashionable cultures. In this way we can enjoy imagining from works of art.
